Drilling parameters

Softdrill NL

Drilling parameters are captured for the entire wellpath independent of any BHA or daily report.  This data should be captured for drilling new hole (formations) only; drilling cement or milling must not be included.  Any parameters or data for drilling cement or milling operations may be logged (for reference) on the daily operations.  It is also intended that a new record is added for every change in parameters (even if only one changes) and that all records form a consecutive sequence of depths without gaps. Note that for this purposes (repeated data values) the Ditto function is very useful.

Ideally (and if input as intended) there should be a row for each BHA Depth In and Depth Out.

Most data should be self-explanatory but some fields may require some additional explanation.

The Date, Time From and Time To fields are not mandatory and may be left blank. Optionally, columns may be hidden. The Daily Activities on the Daily Report are coded and serve as the primary source for calculating drilling, circulating, reaming and below rotary hours.  If desired the Date, Time From and Time To fields may be used to provide a secondary log of drilling hours, circulating & reaming hours and ROP.  However, these are calculated in the context of this form only and not used any further.

When the data is calculated, the Drilling Hours, Circ & Ream Hours and ROP columns will be derived from the Time From and Time To fields, taking into account that if Time To is earlier than Time From it must be on the following day. Note however, that for accurate filtering, it is strongly recommended to break Parameter records at midnight (i.e. Create a record that ends at midnight and another one that starts at midnight).

The entire time between Time From and Time To will be regarded as Drilling Hours, but any time spent not drilling may be logged in the sub-grid that can be accessed by clicking the arrow (>) button in the left-most column.  Each record in the sub-grid represents time spent with the bit of bottom (i.e. not drilling).  Both Time From and Time To must be entered in order to calculate the time spent in Hours.  The Activity field labels the non-drilling time; ‘Reaming’ and ‘Circulating’ will be excluded from Drilling Hours in the main data grid but totaled into the Circ & Ream Hrs column.  All other operations, such as connection time (labeled ‘Other’) will be excluded (subtracted) from both.

When the checkbox in the Oriented column is checked, a toolface orientation (TFO) must be entered and Surface RPM must be left blank.  If Oriented is unchecked, the reverse applies. Incorrect input will raise an error message when attempting to save the data.

TFO must be input in one of the following formats:

1.[#][#]#L. Two optional and one mandatory digits plus L for Left of highside. Examples: 123L, 23L or 3L.

2.[#][#]#R. Same as 1. but R for right of highside. Examples: 123R, 23R or 3R.

3.[#][#]#m, Same as 1. but m for magnetic toolface. Examples: 123m, 23m or 3m.

Exact high side toolface may be entered as 0L or 0R.

Stab Gauge is intended for BHA's with a variable (adjustable) gauge stabilizer (AGS).  For each parameter record, the gauge setting should be input.  The field may be left blank if there's no AGS in the BHA.  Optionally, this column may be hidden.
