Equipment inventory

The Well Equipment Inventory serves two purposes:

Provide an overview of equipment that is or has been on location;

Whilst the purpose of tracking equipment on location is fairly obvious, maintaining an inventory also provides the option to print a Backload List or to Copy an Inventory from another well.

Provide a lookup database for all tools with a serial number;

All tools in the inventory must therefore have a serial number and they are assigned an internal – globally unique – ID. When tool data is entered in the BHA tally, the serial number for a tool can only be selected from a drop-down list which is populated from the inventory data.

Hidden from the user, the BHA tally does not store the serial number but rather the globally unique ID.  Because inventory tool records are linked to the BHA tally records on the internal ID, accurate summary reports (such as bit records, mud motor records, tool utilization reports, etc) can be produced independent of the serial number.  This is important because tools with the same serial number spelled differently (e.g. ‘AA-1234’, ‘AA 1234’ or ‘aa-1234’) would otherwise be treated as separate tools.

Because of the internally assigned ID, it is possible to have duplicate serial numbers in the Equipment Inventory.  It should be noted however, that additional occurrences of the same serial number will treated as new tools.  This is useful for tools of which the hours are tracked and that are returned to location after inspection and maintenance.  For example, a mud motor may have been run in one or more BHA's and accumulated an certain amount of hours. It is then sent to the shop, fully serviced and returned to the rig site.  It should then be entered in the inventory as a second record of the motor; both records being distinguished by the dates on and off location.  The 'new' motor will start at zero hours! When selecting a serial number from the drop-down list in the BHA tally, the Date On Location will be shown in the drop-down list.  Care should be taken to select the correct record, so that calculation of the accumulated hours will be correct.

As shown in the image above, certain tool classes have the option to store so-called profile points.  The purpose of this data is described in detail in BHA profile points, but storing this data in the Inventory, makes it possible to copy this data when the tool is selected in a BHA tally thereby preventing repeated input.  Note that the profile point data is copied to the BHA tally and may be changed.  This is useful if, for example, a mud motor in the Inventory has a 0.75° bend angle but is run with a 1.50° bend on a specific BHA.

The Position field is the distance from the bottom connection shoulder to the profile point.  The Type field is selectable from a drop-down list which will only show options relevant to the current Tool Class.  Dependant on the profile point type, a value for Size or Angle must be provided.

The Hole Size field is for informational purposes only.  It is useful to group or filter tools belonging to the same hole section.  The set Hole Size for multiple tools simultaneously, select the tools with Shift-Click or Ctrl-Click and the select [Set hole size...] from the context menu (right-click).
